Spring 2018-Fall 2019
Project Type: Thesis Dissertation
Site Location: Jersey City, NJ
Excerpt from Abstract: The goal of this is to create a space that harvests the livelihood of the female- American Muslim diaspora while curating an entirely inclusive space which promotes innovation, free thinking and creativity.
The recent political climate has propelled discrimination and violence towards immigrants from all over the world who are presently residing in the United States. Recognizing that the Muslim community experiences much of this discrimination and due to the religious headdress or hijab worn by women, women face more discrimination then their male counterparts.
“This project is a design of the Salaam Center, a civic center which prioritizes the diverse needs of the contemporary Muslim woman, located in Jersey City, New Jersey. The Salaam Center would provide opportunities for Muslim women who want to be able to experience a public space without having to compromise on religious obligations. This thesis explores a site in Jersey City, NJ a home to a large Muslim community, to develop a building for Muslim women, their families and to invite non-Muslims to experience a small part of the culture and art. The majority of this building is primarily for women and young children.”
